Making the shift from technical expert to managing and leading people can be exhilarating when you get it right, frustrating when you get it wrong, and generate fear about not having what it takes and getting found out.
Leadership can feel like a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride.
It doesn't matter how long you've been leading, there are times when we all feel like we're not enough. If you're feeling like an imposter who doesn't belong, that is a ride you want to get off!
With over 160 leadership styles currently reported in research, the expectations on those of us courageous enough to step up and lead have grown.
Executive and management titles don’t guarantee leadership, despite employees holding them primarily accountable when things aren’t working.
Trying to emulate multiple leadership styles, or develop your own, can be confusing, and overwhelming, and lead to more questions instead of answers and action.
Even for proactive people, we live in a noisy world where information is easy with more self-help and leadership development advice than we’ve ever had – but limited time to curate and implement what works individually and across broader contexts.
Like reaching a higher level in a game or sport, you can't skip the work to get there, if you do success is a fluke or doesn't last. Performance isn't just about the technical skills either, it also requires awareness and energy that can be up or down on any given day.
From a leadership perspective, the first step is knowing where you're at and what you need to focus on to help you level up. If you're leading a team or trying to influence stakeholders, you need to know and respect where they are too.
On most days, what state are you in?
Adaptable: With well-rounded leadership skills and a commitment to mastery, adaptive leaders inspire action above and beyond expectations. They deeply and purposefully amplify individual and team strengths to grow and make a lasting positive impact.
Inspired: Inspired people actively work to create value-driven opportunities and build partnerships that lift others to achieve individual and shared goals.
Trusted: People who are trusted are more likely to seek opportunities to influence and improve things because they believe that the extra effort will create a benefit.
Controlling: When working through change, a lack of trust in others can lead to overly risk-averse behaviour that limits potential. Having a personal presence that is calm and confident opens doors. The ability to delegate is also needed to develop broader capability.
Reactive: If people are unable to understand and work with emotions, they become reactive and micro-manage as they desperately need to gain control.
Powerless: When people feel powerless their core values are not being met, and their energy and performance dives. Responsibility is needed to prevent an attitude of blame and get out of the pain.
